Back Pain
Back pain affects 80% of Americans and manifests in many different forms, including contracted muscles, trigger points and referred pain, nerve entrapment, and other causes. Massage therapy can help ease the burden of pain associated with tightened and constricted muscles, reduce muscle inflammation and compression, increase mobility and flexibility, relieve trigger point pain, and promote an overall sense of wellness. Massage therapy is excellent when integrated into a medically supervised back-treatment plan, so be sure to ask your doctor about it.
Post-surgical Scars
Scar tissue from surgical incisions often may result in a myofascial (muscle) pain syndrome. For example, an individual who has had a surgical incision in the abdominal region may experience an uncomfortable pulling or tugging sensation that travels deep under the tissue and even extends to other regions of the body. During the healing process from a surgical incision, the muscles at the incision site stick and bind together in tension patterns that create new contours, which can result in muscular imbalances and pain. Massage therapy aims to "un-wrinkle" the muscular fabric and release these tension patterns to reduce pain and discomfort. Consult your doctor for a referral.
Cosmetic Surgery Scars
The texture and feel of coarse scar tissue from cosmetic surgery can significantly be improved through massage therapy, which can soften and flatten the soft tissues, thereby minimizing the appearance of visible scars. Similar to post-surgical scars (described above), during the initial healing process, the formation of scar tissue can generate an uncomfortable pulling sensation and tightness in and around the incision area. Massage therapy helps eliminate these uncomfortable sensations while maintaining the tone of the soft tissue. Massage therapy is recommended during the recovery phase of any cosmetic surgery. Consult your doctor for a referral.
Tension Headaches
Tension headaches, or stress headaches, as they also are known, are all too common in this fast-paced world. People who suffer from these debilitating headaches generally experience stiffness combined with a continuous dull ache at the lower back of head. Other associated conditions that frequently accompany tension headaches include pain and tenderness at the temples and on the top of the head, sore neck and/or shoulders, and jaw stiffness. Massage therapy treatment is highly effective in relieving tension and chronic headaches and relieving the stress that causes this type of pain.
